Welcome!

Welcome to the Širava Slovak Folk Ensemble’s web page. Širava Slovak Folk Ensemble is a group that expresses the cultural heritage of its native Slovakia and presents it to our multicultural North American society through dance and song. Through its dances, the ensemble has laid a great deal of importance upon the intimate knowledge of the folk character of the given region, and the development of individual abilities of all the members. By choosing music from different regions of Slovakia, the ensemble’s repertoire demonstrates the beauty and variety of Slovak folklore.

Based in Montreal, the Širava Slovak Folk Ensemble was founded by Linda Varga in November 1989. Širava started out with three couples and today we stand at 6 dancers with a repertoire of 12 dances. Širava will be celebrating its 22nd anniversary in November of this year.  Members are proud of their Slovak Heritage and are happy to contribute to the Canadian culture. On our website, you will find information about who we are, the types of dances that we do, pictures from performances we have done, as well as a list of future performances to be held.
